How to Approach Controversial Topics on LinkedIn

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 11th edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.

I’m a guest on this week’s episode of the Life & Law Podcast. We discuss step-by-step how to get started with engaging and posting on LinkedIn. We also touch on why generously supporting others on LinkedIn (including your “competitors”) is a good strategy for everyone. Hint - it provides value to your network, it deepens your relationship with others, and it allows you to become more visible on the platform.

We also delve into whether and how lawyers should approach controversial issues on LinkedIn - a perfectly timed topic for the inauguration of the new president this week, his slew of executive orders, the ceasefire in the Middle East, Elon’s alleged Nazi salute, the LA fires, etc. I could go on.

The host, Heather Moulder, and I are not in complete agreement on this subject. We discuss how my position has softened in recent months - from controversial topics being entirely off-limits in LinkedIn posts, to it being okay depending on your job situation. Heather’s position for the most part is not to hold back if you can manage it.

While being definitive in your view on a contentious matter does risk scaring potential clients away, it also serves to filter them out, and to direct aligned clients to you. Taking a position on a topic, whether it be political or not, shows who you are as a person and a lawyer. That’s how you build a personal brand and attract the right clients to you.

Are you interested in learning more about how to incorporate this and other subject matter into your LinkedIn posts or comments? We strategize on your messaging in my 1:1 LinkedIn in 8 coaching and training program. Book a call with me to get started.

You can listen to the podcast episode here.

Warmest Regards and see you next week,

Jamie

LinkedIn Tip of The Week:

Do you work at a law firm and want to post on a controversial topic? First consider how it may impact who you work with. If it’s possible that a co-worker could lose a client as a result, you may want to consider not doing it. If you’re a sole practitioner, it may be a good strategy for you given what I discussed above. If you work with a couple other attorneys, I would discuss in advance how you will approach these issues.
