Make Gratitude a Part of Your Business Development Plan

Dear Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving week and welcome to the fourth edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.

Part of having a successful business development plan that yields aligned clients is being in the right mindset - gratitude, sincerity, and authenticity are some of those essential components.

Since this is Thanksgiving week in the U.S., let’s focus on gratitude as part of your business development plan. I’d like to look at it from two angles - the gratitude you feel when seeing what you’ve accomplished and the gratitude you express to those who support you.

  1. Take a few minutes this week (especially with the short work week in the U.S.) to write a list of accomplishments from this past year that you’re proud of. They can be big or small. We all have goals - whether they be significant career goals or that you checked something off your to-do list. Save this list of accomplishments in a place where you’ll be able to find it or post it above your computer. Look at it when you’re having a challenging day or you feel imposter syndrome sneaking up. Talk to your family and friends about your accomplishments. Think about this list when you’re working toward your 2025 goals.

  2. Then write a list of people who have been instrumental in supporting your business this year - referral partners, clients, colleagues, family members, friends, mentors, coaches, consultants - and thank them with a note. Ideally this should be done with a handwritten note. Write one a day and check the names off the list as you go. If doing handwritten notes will be an obstacle to accomplishing this task, write a text, email, Slack message, etc. Check everyone off your list by the end of the year.

These small actions foster a mindset that leads to accomplishing your goals and creating goodwill within your network.

Warmest regards and see you next Thursday,

Jamie

LinkedIn Tip of The Week:

Don’t just say in your LinkedIn Headline (under your photo) that you’re an attorney, associate, partner, counsel, owner, director, etc. Tell a story. Describe your niche. Identify who you serve. Share your talents. Include words that potential clients or employers will use to search for you. Your Headline follows you as you comment on posts and send messages. It can be a conversation starter or the reason someone decides to hire you.

P.S. All of my 1:1 coaching programs include a revamp by me of your LinkedIn profile, including your LinkedIn About section and Headline. I work with you to remove obstacles so that you can focus on successfully building your brand and book:

  • 1:1 coaching to create a sustainable business development plan aligned with your goals, strengths, target audience, and schedule.

  • 1:1 LinkedIn coaching and training that leverages LinkedIn to grow your visibility and practice without sacrificing billable hours.

  • Business development strategy, training, and fractional services to move your law firm in a focused direction to achieve brand and revenue goals.

  • 1:1 coaching to effectively navigate industry conferences and maximize your ROI.

  • Human Design readings to gain insight into what attracts clients and success to you.
