Let go of fear and Let Them think what they want
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 27th edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.
The first time Mel Robbins gave a speech, she nervously spoke to a room full of more strangers than she expected. What she didn’t know was that at this exact moment, as her most vulnerable, unpolished self, would catapult her to become a global sensation.
This speaking engagement was recorded by TEDx and it went viral.
This accidental exposure has led to Mel’s career as one of the most in-demand speakers in the world, a bestselling author, and host of a podcast available all over the world, with 4.5 million monthly listeners.
None of that would've happened if she hadn't shown up - shaky voice and all.
Her story mirrors mine in a different way.
For years, I clung to the safe path: a prestigious legal career, a partner title, and a steady paycheck. But as my career progressed, I knew I had more to offer than just billable hours.
But I stayed frozen for months after that. I endlessly talked and learned about being a business development coach for attorneys, but I didn’t take the leap.
I was scared at what others might say about this change, and about leaving behind a comfortable salary. Even a year and a half later, I still get asked regularly by attorneys, what made you pivot to being a coach?
But here’s what shifted: I stopped caring.
And, the bet paid off. When I let go of needing others’ approval or abiding by the career I was conditioned to have, I got serious about being a coach and owning my own business.
My success building a practice from 0 to half a million dollars in 4 years, and my mission to empower attorneys to do the same, overtook my fears.
You can change the story for yourself by starting to take steps to get out there to build your practice and personal brand.
What if you stopped asking “what will they think?” and started asking “what will I miss if I don’t?”
It’s common for IP attorneys to avoid self-promotion. They fear judgment from peers. They don’t know what their law firm will think.
Or, they don’t know where to start or how to optimize LinkedIn with the limited time they have.
So they stay invisible or adopt an erratic LinkedIn or business development strategy.
But having a strategy to become more visible and build a network to generate opportunities is not an option in our industry - it’s part of the job.
If you’re ready to stop waiting for permission and start meeting your revenue goals, I can take you there in weeks with a focused business development and/or LinkedIn plan that includes direction, support, and accountability.
It’s time to Let Them think what they want and for you to get out there. If you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend The Let Them Theory book by Mel Robbins.
Warmest Regards and see you next week,
Jamie
LinkedIn Tip of The Week:
Keep repeating your signature message in different ways on LinkedIn. People should be able to know immediately who to call when they need a trademark, copyright, patent, etc. attorney because they see you posting consistently on that core topic. Not everyone will see your posts every day and new people will constantly be coming into your network. Your message will not become old or repetitive if you keep it fresh with current events, personal stories, and client issues that come up daily.
