Get Off the Networking Merry-Go-Round

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the sixth edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.

You don’t have time to run around to networking events or undertake business development activities that don’t produce results, and drain your energy.

If this looks like your typical weekly business development schedule, you’re not alone:

  • BNI meeting on Monday

  • Coffee date or Zoom chat on Tuesday

  • Lunch with a colleague on Wednesday

  • Prepare for a presentation on Thursday

  • Chamber of Commerce meeting on Friday

  • Catch up on LinkedIn on Saturday

  • Take a breath on Sunday

What if you could reduce these activities, do more of them virtually, or combine them with what you love to do outside of work?

These are the questions that are key to focusing your biz dev efforts:

  1. How you prefer to network (big or small groups; online, in-person or hybrid; coffee dates or Zoom chats; social media thought leadership or articles, etc.)

  2. What kind of activities light you up (industry conferences, golf, skiing or other sports, PTO activities, community involvement, nonprofit work, etc.)

  3. What topics light you up (AI, privacy, work life balance, current events, alternative billing, lawyer wellbeing, etc.)

  4. Who your target audience is (who are your ideal clients and referral partners)

  5. What pain points your ideal clients experience

  6. Where your target audience hangs out (which social media platform, what do they read, what conferences do they attend, which networking groups are they in, etc.)

  7. Which services you actually want to market (what niche sets you apart and what part of your practice lights you up the most?)

  8. How to fit business development consistently into your schedule (how to create sustainable habits that drive revenue and opportunities)

  9. Which activities you want to become more comfortable with (posting on LinkedIn, speaking, starting a podcast, and sharing videos)

I work with my clients to implement a plan that combines all of the above so their efforts consistently generate opportunities and work from the right clients, without burning out.

Why not get off the merry-go-round now so you can efficiently meet your goals in 2025

Warmest regards and see you next Thursday,

Jamie

LinkedIn Tip of The Week:

Consider using hashtags to gain visibility for your LinkedIn posts. Use 3-5 hashtags relevant to your post and industry, and choose hashtags with followings in the thousands. You can see the follower count by doing a search for the #hashtag in the search bar and clicking on the #hashtag in one of the posts that pops up. People who follow your hashtags will see your content or they may do searches for topics that include your hashtag. LinkedIn prioritizes and indexes content that aligns with particular industries, so having hashtags is helpful for the algorithm, and it serves to index your content.

P.S. You can work with me in the following ways:

  • 1:1 coaching to create a sustainable business development plan aligned with your goals, strengths, target audience, and schedule.

  • 1:1 LinkedIn coaching and training that leverages LinkedIn to grow your visibility and practice without sacrificing billable hours.

  • Business development strategy, training, and fractional services to move your law firm in a focused direction to achieve brand and revenue goals.

  • 1:1 coaching to effectively navigate industry conferences and maximize your ROI.

  • Human Design readings to gain insight into what attracts clients and success to you.
