Build More Leads by Turning Competitors into Collaborators

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 20th edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.

For most of my career as a lawyer, I thought I needed to

Hold my cards close to my chest.

Hoard work to make my billable hours.

Outperform my peers and competitors.

Be the only one in networking groups from my industry or jurisdiction.

That left me with a small network and a limited book of business when I needed those things the most – to make partner and transition to a new law firm.

This scarcity mindset is common for lawyers because law firms are built on hierarchy, reviews, bonuses, and becoming an equity partner. Lawyers are taught this competitive mindset from early on - even as far back as law school or before.

This may work for some lawyers, but there’s another way that involves much less resistance and way more fun.

Except it’s counterintuitive for lawyers.

It involves adopting an abundance mindset - becoming a connector, sharing information freely with your colleagues and network, and seeing other lawyers at your firm and in your industry as collaborators and not competitors.

When I stopped living within a scarcity mindset 14 years into my career, the momentum changed. The more I gave, the more came back.

I was able to scale to a book of business worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, make partner, and build a network of thousands of followers on LinkedIn.

Coaching was integral to the process of letting go of a scarcity mindset for me. One of the ways we work on building your book of business and visibility in the industry is by adopting a mindset based on abundance.

It worked for me and it’s been working for my clients. If you’re ready to learn more about this strategy in order to develop more leads, let’s start now.

Warmest Regards and see you next week,

Jamie
