Don’t just build someone else’s book of business - get in the game with LinkedIn
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 25th edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.
For years, I did everything I thought a "good lawyer" should do:
Hit my billable target.
Kept my head down.
And, got the work done for clients someone else brought in.
I told myself that if I just worked hard enough, the recognition, referrals, and career progression would happen.
But they didn’t.
Meanwhile, colleagues were getting handed clients, being invited to conferences all over the world, and racking up new business.
Why? Because they were developing visibility and relationships beyond the walls of their offices and inboxes.
Here’s what no one told me: billing hours doesn’t build your own book of business.
It builds someone else’s.
And while your day may be packed with client demands, deadlines, and back-to-back meetings, that alone doesn’t make you valuable to the firm.
Because real value - the kind that gets you brought in on headline-making projects or makes your name come up when partnership decisions are made - comes from having influence.
And influence comes from visibility and reputation - not from billable hours.
When I finally started showing up on LinkedIn, I started small.
A few comments.
A post here and there.
An announcement of a webinar.
A few minutes a day compounded into significant results.
Referrals,
Speaking and writing opportunities,
Getting recognized at conferences, and
Being introduced as “someone you have to talk to.”
I didn’t have to chase work anymore, it started to find me.
The best part? I still got to go home at the end of the day and be with my family. No extra hours burned, no weekends sacrificed.
Just a simple, personalized strategy I could actually follow, even with a full billable plate.
If you’re an IP attorney tired of waiting for recognition, referrals, or leverage in your career, or hoping to meet big goals, it’s time to take control of your visibility.
I’ll coach you through a personalized and optimized LinkedIn strategy that fits into your workday to help you progress in your career.
In just 8 weeks, you’ll see more engagement, more client leads, and a rising reputation, which, like my past clients, will make you the obvious choice.
Send me an email or schedule a call to grab one of the last two coaching spots I have this month.
Warmest Regards and see you next week,
Jamie
