Conference Results Don’t Happen Magically - Plan with Intention
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 37th edition of Short & Sweet, a weekly newsletter where I provide brief tips for attorneys to build their brand and book of business, on and off of LinkedIn. Read until the end to see my LinkedIn tip of the week.
Packing your best blazer, a fresh stack of business cards, and a copy of the agenda is not enough to generate real results from a conference.
Without a plan, you’re going to be left with thousands of dollars of receipts and precious billable hours lost “doing business development” without getting much in return.
If you’ve ever landed back at your desk wondering what all the effort was for, you’re not alone.
Here’s what I’ve learned: Conferences don’t create results by default; they create results by design.
Going into a conference with intention rather than on the fly means you don’t come home with regret, which looks like:
Failing to get a meeting with that important client or prospect.
Getting passed over for a speaking role because no one knew you were there.
Feeling invisible during cocktail hours.
Forgetting to follow up with someone you hit it off with.
Scrambling to justify the expense to a skeptical partner.
It’s time to change the playbook.
Once you start treating conferences like your next important court date or client meeting, results begin to happen.
This starts with mapping out:
Who you need to meet and how to warm them up beforehand to make sure you get the meeting.
Which events are worth your precious time and energy.
How to handle hallway intros, unscripted run-ins, and dinner parties.
How to make sure to follow up, and follow up in a way that generates real results.
If you take the time to create this map, I promise you’ll walk away with billable work, speaking opportunities, and dinner invitations for your next conference.
If you’ve got conferences on your calendar this fall - INTA, AIPLA, PTMG, ChIPs, etc. - this is the moment to shift how you show up.
My Own the Conference 1:1 coaching prep program is designed exclusively for IP attorneys. It consists of:

LinkedIn Tip of The Week:
Don’t wait until you’re on-site at a conference to start networking. By then, it’s too late to stand out. Instead, connect on LinkedIn with those you want to meet at the conference and post content about your practice ahead of the conference so people get to know you and recognize you in the crowd. In addition, post a month before, a couple weeks before, and right before the conference about the fact that you will be attending. Tag the event and some speakers or people you know who are attending, and also invite people to connect with you at the conference.
